Build an Energy-Efficient House

Build an Energy-Efficient House

Build an Energy-Efficient House

Australian architect Glenn Murcutt shows how to build energy-efficient homes
The most energy-efficient houses function like living things. They are designed to capitalize on the local environment and to respond to the climate. Australian architect and Pritzker Prize-Winner Glenn Murcutt is known for designing earth-friendly homes that imitate nature. Even if you live far from Australia, you can apply Glenn Murcutt's ideas to your own home-building project
1. Use Simple Materials
Forget the polished marble, imported tropical wood, and costly brass and pewter. A Glenn Murcutt home is unpretentious, comfortable, and economical. He uses inexpensive materials that are readily available in his native Australian landscape. Notice, for example, Murcutt's Marie Short House. The roof is corrugated metal, the window louvres are enameled steel, and the walls are timber from a nearby sawmill.
2.Touch the Earth Lightly
Glenn Murcutt is fond of quoting the Aboriginal proverb touch the earth lightly because it expresses his concern for nature. Building in the Murcutt way means taking special measures to safeguard the surrounding landscape. Nestled in an arid Australian forest, Murcutt's Ball-Eastaway House hovers above the earth on steel stilts. Because there is no deep excavation, the dry soil and surrounding trees are protected.
3. Follow the Sun
Prized for their energy efficiency, Glenn Murcutt's houses capitalize on natural light. Their shape is long and low, and they often feature verandas, skylights, adjustable louvres, and movable screens. Notice the linear form and expansive windows of Murcutt's Magney House. Stretching across a barren, wind-swept site overlooking the ocean, the home is designed to capture the sun.
4. Listen to the Wind
Even in the hot, tropical climate of Australia's Northern Territory, houses by Glenn Murcutt do not need air conditioning. Ingenious systems for ventilation assure that cooling breezes circulate through open rooms. At the same time, these houses are insulated from the heat and protected from strong cyclone winds. Murcutt's Marika-Alderton House is often compared to a plant because the walls open and close like petals and leaves.

"Life is not about maximizing everything, it's about giving something back - like light, space, form, serenity, joy."

Before Buying Furniture

The living room is freshly painted and the floors are laid with sparkling tiles. Now all that's left is to bring in the furniture. But before you go out and shop for the sofa set, coffee tables and everything else, here are a couple of things you might want to consider.

Size
Always remember that the size of your furniture must be in proportion to the size of your room. For example even though you have your heart set on that luxurious velvet sofa set it may not suit your living room.

If you have a small living room, opt for sleeker furniture without bulky upholstery and padded armrests. Also fewer large pieces of furniture would be a better option rather than many small pieces that crowd the room. A plush sofa set would fill up the place and be great in a larger living room.

Tip: Decide where exactly in the living room you want your furniture to go. After that, you can measure the area so you know approximately what furniture size will fit there. Also remember to take into account the space required between the wall and the furniture while measuring.
Material
Be careful while buying wooden furniture. Furniture made of particleboard and medium density fiberboard is also called "solid wood". But furniture made out of these is not worth buying, as it is harder to repair and heavier than real wood. Buy furniture with signs that explicitly say solid oak wood or cherry wood or ash wood. These are safer to buy.
A number of times you want to know the kind of finish that has been used on your furniture. To find out you will have to do a solvent test. Dip cotton in some nail polish remover or acetone and rub over an area that is not easily visible. If the finish softens then the finish is nitrocellulose lacquer, which is the most popular finish in the furniture industry. If the finish softens with alcohol then the finish is shellac. If it does not soften with either acetone or alcohol then the finish is varnish, polyurethane, catalyzed lacquer etc. that cannot be dissolved by its original solvent.
If you are applying finish on your furniture then remember to account for humidity. High levels of humidity in the air will prevent the finish from drying and it will turn white or have a dull finish. If a professional is finishing your furniture then allow the piece to dry completely, for a few days before using it.
Placing any kind of potpourri directly on the furniture will damage the finish even though it is kept in cloth or plastic bag.
If metal bed frames are squeaking then just apply oil to the rivets and this will stop it from squeaking. If a bed made out of wood squeaks, it means it is getting loose and needs re-gluing.
In a drawer wood moves against wood and certain parts need to be lubricated. If drawers stick rub some paste wax on the drawer and the wood that it rides on. If this does not work then the drawer needs some repair or is very worn out.
Glass tabletops actually protect the wooden tables. Do not allow moisture get trapped between the glass and the wood. Raise the glass tabletop with rubber bumpers, this will allow airspace and let the wood breath.
Before using wooden screws rub a little candle or bee's wax or soap on the screw threads and it will move more smoothly.

Style

The furniture you pick up must go with the rest of your rooms.

So if you want to include embroidered cushions, block printed curtains, lots of Indian artefacts and curios etc., you might want to have a divan with bolsters and a couple of low armchairs. A mild steel sofa set with leather upholstery might look out of place, don't you think?

Also make sure the colours of your furniture match with the walls, curtains and other elements in the room.

Choose the minimalist furniture style if your living room is small because it tends to make it look more spacious. On the other hand, Victorian style furniture would look lovely in larger living rooms.

Tip: Picture your living room the way you want it to look once it is ready. Now that you have a clear idea of what you want, you won't need to waste any time at stores that don't have the kind of furniture you want.

Must Have Items
If you are working with a budget or with space constraints and want to restrict the furniture shopping, here are some of the must-have pieces of furniture for you living room.

A sofa set (a love seat with two single-seater armchairs) or two divans
A coffee table
A wall unit or showcase
A TV trolley
Maintenance
If you don't have time to clean your home everyday and once a week is about all you can manage. In such case it would be better to opt for easy wipe laminated or melamine furniture. But if you have a maid to help you out, you could go with fancier furniture that requires more maintenance.

Another important factor to consider is where you live. If you have a seaside apartment, wrought iron furniture may not be such a good idea because it may rust over time. Also if you live by a busy street, carved furniture might be a problem to clean.

If you have a centrally air-conditioned home, fixed upholstery is fine because the dust won't ruin it. But if you don't, try changeable upholstery so you can dry-clean it every once in a while.

Tip: Explore various options in furniture styles and materials. You never know, you may just find that mahogany or rosewood furniture sans the carving looks just as great as the carved pieces.

Alternative to wooden doors &windows

                                      Alternative to wooden doors &windows

Wood is the most popular choice for construction of door and window frames. Wooden frames give architectural beauty to the building and are easy to maintain. There are many types of wood according to the quality. The type of wood is used according to the requirement of the building and availability of budget.

When people think off wood works in house first preference will go fo TEAK wood ,because of its durability compared to other woods .Teak has been widely used in India for more than 2,000 years for making wood works in house and and other constructiuons . An important property of teak is its extremely good dimensional stability.
Due to the increased cost of woods available people tends to move towards alternatives. Some times the alternate method was more strong than wood based mechanism. A good example is the building's roofs
Now a day construction costs are very high. There is many reasons behind this hike in cost especially the
1. Cost of construction materials.
2. Increase in labour cost
3. Transportation cost ….. etc .
So the people they need economical construction will go for alternatives.
Here I am presenting alternatives for some commonly used building materials.
Wood door/window frames with concrete frames.By using concrete frames instead of wood frames can reduce cost of wood by 60%.While building homes people are spending lot of money on wood works to forms door/window frames..Why they can use steel aluminium frames instead of this wood ? . Because they like traditionals and they will not accept the less thickened aluminium or steel frames even though they have the same capabilities in terms fo strength and more thermal resistance compared to wood.
An alternative which compensates for the above two shortfalls of aluminium and steel door and window frames is the usage of concrete doors and window frames.
These Door Frames are available in variety of sizes and shapes to meet the exact requirements of the variety uses, features like durability, termite resistance and impressive looks. Moreover, these products are also available at market leading prices. Usually the section is 60x100mm and 4mm ms bar used for reinforcement. The approximate wait of one door frame is about 14kg

A window frame of size 150cm x 150cm, including grills and three partitions will cost only 10% of the cost of the same window pane made of wood (Teak). For door frames also the cost saving will be on these lines.
Aesthetically it will provide same appeal as of wood frames ,and we will get some additional qualities like thermal resistance and termite resistance . Some precautions need to be taken while selecting concrete doors and window frames which are listed below.
1. Wood blocks for fixing hinges and locks.
It is difficult to drill holes for screwing in nails in concrete frames. So for fixing the hinges and locks which is to be screwed tight, wooden blocks will be inserted the areas where these need to be fixed. These blocks will be inserted in the mould itself so that when the concrete hardens this forms an integral part of the system.

2. Do not use the frame near kitchen sink, bath room or areas which come to contact with water
Use it for internal door frames bed room windows .do not use it for external areas
Don’t sue for bath rooms, use PVC door and frames is the best choice
3 Use paint to protect from degradation and to get good appeal
When painting ensures that enough putty is used in order to reduce the imperfections and damages made by transportation and this will give good finish like wood.
4 Decide the window grill design before making the mould/frame ,after casting we cannot put even a simple design into the frame .Fist make design for grills and give holes in mould to incorporate.

The carpenters they will not agree to opinion because they will lose a chance for job.
