Build an Energy-Efficient House

Australian architect Glenn Murcutt shows how to build energy-efficient homes
The most energy-efficient houses function like living things. They are designed to capitalize on the local environment and to respond to the climate. Australian architect and Pritzker Prize-Winner Glenn Murcutt is known for designing earth-friendly homes that imitate nature. Even if you live far from Australia, you can apply Glenn Murcutt's ideas to your own home-building project
1. Use Simple Materials
Forget the polished marble, imported tropical wood, and costly brass and pewter. A Glenn Murcutt home is unpretentious, comfortable, and economical. He uses inexpensive materials that are readily available in his native Australian landscape. Notice, for example, Murcutt's Marie Short House. The roof is corrugated metal, the window louvres are enameled steel, and the walls are timber from a nearby sawmill.
2.Touch the Earth Lightly
Glenn Murcutt is fond of quoting the Aboriginal proverb touch the earth lightly because it expresses his concern for nature. Building in the Murcutt way means taking special measures to safeguard the surrounding landscape. Nestled in an arid Australian forest, Murcutt's Ball-Eastaway House hovers above the earth on steel stilts. Because there is no deep excavation, the dry soil and surrounding trees are protected.
3. Follow the Sun
Prized for their energy efficiency, Glenn Murcutt's houses capitalize on natural light. Their shape is long and low, and they often feature verandas, skylights, adjustable louvres, and movable screens. Notice the linear form and expansive windows of Murcutt's Magney House. Stretching across a barren, wind-swept site overlooking the ocean, the home is designed to capture the sun.
4. Listen to the Wind
Even in the hot, tropical climate of Australia's Northern Territory, houses by Glenn Murcutt do not need air conditioning. Ingenious systems for ventilation assure that cooling breezes circulate through open rooms. At the same time, these houses are insulated from the heat and protected from strong cyclone winds. Murcutt's Marika-Alderton House is often compared to a plant because the walls open and close like petals and leaves.

INTERLOCKING BRICKS, LOW COST CONSTRUCTION METHODS

 Inter Locking Bricks (INTERLOCKING BRICKS)

We can see that our construction technology and construction materials existed here about a thousand years ago. However, our manufacturing industry is still very well-equipped and sometimes very important. This is where there is a need to switch to construction methods such as cheap INTERLOCKING BRICKS.

INTERLOCKING BRICKS is an important low cost construction method that now exists in Kerala. The wall is built by locking each other like a name. So we can reduce cement and sand use

Red soil, which contains at least twenty per cent clay, is used to make INTER LOCKING BRICKS, which is compressed into moulds with a certain proportion of cement GRAVEL and some chemicals to keep it scattered. It will have about 5.5 N/CM2 COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH

.

Quality

This can generate a profit of about 30-35% over building a house using other common means.

1. PLASTERING & amp; PAINTING essential.

2. Can be installed very easily

Disadvantages

1. Electric wire cannot drill through the wall and pipe like normal walls

2. Cannot be used as LOAD BEARING WALL above two floors.

3. It is best to plaster or paint where water is likely to fall on the outer walls or cause it to collapse and fade colour.

4. EXPERIENCED workers are required

Comparison between Koncrete AAC Blocks & RCC bricks

Koncrete AAC (Autoclaved Aerated Concrete) Blocks are new-age-green building material that is easy to handle compared to Red Clay Bricks. The film compares all aspects of the AAC Blocks with the common Red Clay Concrete Bricks (RCC) and proves why it is better to use.
The blocks are large, easy to handle, superior in quality and most importantly saves in time and cost.

M SAND an alternative to river sand

CONSTRUCTION ; M SAND AND USES
M SAND

‘Eco – friendly’ has become the brand name of kerala. This state which has been constantly taking initiatives to protect its natural balance. State and its people have a long heritage of discouraging anything that went against the natural equity of the land.
Because of that a new twist is the fact that the boom in the tourism industry and the IT industry has created a pollution free alternative for the industries that the state had lost due to its uncompromising decision on environmental issues. This does not mean that the state is entirely safe. Uncontrolled and indiscriminate mining of river beds for ‘sand’ which is one of the unavoidable element in the construction sector has lead to the death of the rivers which are in fact the life line of the state. They have great influence on the climate, vegetation and animal life. Culture and economy of the land, and tourism industry which is one of the biggest source of income and employment is all dependent on these rivers.
 RIVER SAND

The ever-rising demand for sand as a result of the increase in the construction work is killing many such rivers. ‘Bharathapuzha’ and its distributaries of Palakad district are the most effected in the state by this unhealthy practice resulting in acute drinking water storage and the drying up of the river itself.

These increasing environmental concerns forced the government to ban sand mining in the major rivers of the state. In any case, the illegal sand mining lobbies have grown so strong and influential that it has became a nightmare to the concerned officials to move a finger against them.

The good news is that the alternative to river sand is now available and a couple of major companies have already setup units of manufactured sand (M-sand) in the state. In palakad, a unit has been working for the last five years. Its products have been used for buildings and road constructions. M-sand is produced as per is 383-2970 of Indian Standard Specification for base and fine aggregates code and ensuring the quality of concrete structures.

M SAND is achieved through crushing big hard granites  into smaller particles similar to river sand its sizes, it is cubically shaped and rounded edges , processed and washed well before use to make clean from  dusts.

M SAND  FROM CRUSHED STONES

The code says that M-Sand should be “hard, strong, dense, durable, clear, and free from veins and adherent coaling; and free from injurious amounts of disintegrated pieces, alkali, vegetable matter and other deleterious substances. As far as possible, flaky and elongated pieces should be avoided”. The biggest arch dam of Asia, Idukki dam, was constructed using M-sand 40 years ago and it still stands strong proving the strength of the material. The cost of this novel material is also on par with the conventional sand. Ten tones of m-sand costs Rs 6000 which is the same as the river sand. Then why kill the rivers when there is a more superior alternative with less environmental problems?

Other major threat to nature is cutting down of trees. The typical Kerala houses usually take a great amount of wood to build but introduction of pre- cast ferro-cement products have changed the situation to a great extend. Pre-cast ferro-cement concrete products including traditional decorative items like the ‘charupadi’ - a bed stead like seat one finds in the traditional households are becoming popular in Malabar areas as they are cheaper and durable. Apart from the decorative items the pre-cast products being widely used for constructing low-cost houses include ferro-cement cement roofing slabs, ferro-cement walls, door frames, window frames, ventilators and many more.

The demand for these materials are likely to sore making this land a perfect ‘god’s own country.
