തെക്കിനി ,വടക്കിനി, കിഴക്കിനി, പടിജ്ഞാട്ടിനി, എന്നിങ്ങനെ നാലു ഭാഗങ്ങള്‍ കുടി ചേരുന്നതാണ് നാലുകെട്ട്. നാലുകെട്ടിനെക്കാള്‍ വലിപ്പവും സ്ഥല സൌകര്യവും കുടുതലുള്ള എട്ടുകെട്ട് ,പതിനാറുകെട്ട് തുടങ്ങിയവയും കേരളത്തില്‍ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. പേരുപോലെത്തന്നെ എട്ടുകെട്ടില്‍ 4 ഉo പതിനാറു കെട്ടില്‍ 16 ഉo ഭാഗങ്ങള്‍ ആണ് ഉള്ളത്. ശരിയായ വായു പ്രവഹത്തിനും വെളിച്ചത്തിനും വേണ്ടി ഒരു നടുമുറ്റം ഇവയുടെ ഒരു സവിശേഷതയാണ്. മുറികള്‍ നടുമുറ്റത്തിനു ചുറ്റുമായി ഒരുക്കിയിരിക്കുന്നു.
